Compass Realty Group’s Spotlight on Laura Baker
When you hire a Compass Realty Group REALTOR®, you get exceptional customer service. And part of that is allowing our clients to get to know our REALTORs® better through our monthly REALTOR® spotlights.
This month our featured REALTOR® is one of our newer team members, Laura Baker, who works out of Compass’ Amery location.
Serving others in creative ways
For years, Laura worked in the retail and hospitality industries. She attended University of Northwestern - St. Paul in Roseville, MN, where she studied studio art, which differs greatly from what she does now. But it’s where her creativity and eye for marketing design grew. And having that creative mind gives her an advantage when it comes to problem solving in the world of real estate.
Eventually, she found her way to real estate through an online ad she saw. “I was looking for a way to serve people and use my creative problem-solving skills. Real estate fit the bill,” she said.
Her career in real estate didn’t immediately take off. But when she moved onto a second well-known local recreational land company, things quickly picked up speed in her business..
Give me land, lots of land
Laura specializes in recreational land, lake homes, and cabins in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Her knowledge of the market, love of the outdoors, and enjoyment of “lake life” makes those looking for a property to enjoy nature fall into her wheelhouse.
She also has a lot of experience in buying and selling short sales and foreclosures. She had a lot of these types of sales and calls herself a “real estate nerd,” being obsessed with looking at houses for sale.
Laura works hard to help those who may have been rejected by other agents, because their house is difficult to sell or their situation makes selling difficult. She said, “I can see how it might be more difficult for these folks to sell. But because of my problem-solving skills, I can also see that it’s possible.”
Finding her way with Compass
Besides a business in real estate, Laura also renovates and flips houses. She was living in the Twin Cities and found a house to flip in the town where her parents lived. The town of Amery. She loved the house so much she decided not to flip it, but to move her family into it. They moved to Amery during the pandemic and are settling in, loving life in this wonderful community..
When asked what she likes about being part of the Compass team, Laura said, “I enjoy being at a local company. We know the market in our area and we know it really well. We know the people who are buying and selling in the area. And (owner) Alison is a powerhouse. She’s constantly striving to meet the needs of the community and also does it ethically.”
The admiration between Alison and Laura is mutual. “Laura is very attentive to clients. She puts so much care into each transaction and is always very present with her clients and peers. She’s creative, always thinking, and brilliantly innovative. She’s trustworthy and genuine. Laura has been an amazing addition to the Compass team and we’re so lucky to have her working for our community.”
Hats, hats, so many hats
To say that Laura is a busy woman is an understatement. Not only is she a REALTOR® and a house flipper, but she also manages a motel. She also has short-term vacation rentals. She’s on the board at Skonewood Christian Retreat (near Cushing, WI) and she’s a member of Apple River Community Church. Oh, and she’s a wife and mom too.
But even with all of that, her love of real estate ensures she makes time for her clients. “My favorite part of my job is serving clients and helping them meet their goals. Helping people move onto new chapters is really fun and I love it,” she said.
Being newer to the community can be a bit challenging when establishing a real estate career. But Laura’s finding ways to become a part of Amery through her involvement at her new church.
Another challenge she knows she needs to navigate are the changes in the market. Riding of the ups and downs of market conditions can be tricky in real estate, but Laura is up to the task.
Ready to serve
Laura is married to her husband, Nate. Together they’re raising their three children, ages 10, 8, and 2.
Even as a busy mom, wife, church member, house flipper, and REALTOR®, occasionally Laura has downtime. She loves the water and gravitates to oceans and lakes. You might find her fishing on a lake or bringing her kids to the beach near their Florida vacation home.
Laura loves to serve people and help them realize their home-owning dreams. If you would like to make your dreams a reality or start a new chapter, Laura would be delighted to serve you.
